Dividend Paid - Economy still challenging

Privately owned radio operator, UKRD Group, has declared its half year dividend for the third year running but has confirmed that trading remains difficult in some parts of the country and visibility poor.

The group, which owns and operates 16 local stations across the country, has increasingly shifted its commercial focus on to the local areas it serves and now delivers in excess of 85% of its revenues from within each of its stations areas.

“Trading continues to be patchy and there’s no doubt that advertising revenues remain very short term, particularly in the national marketplace,” said Chief Executive Officer William Rogers.

“As we have increasingly driven our genuinely local strategy, as opposed to the lip service to localness paid by some, there is a clear trend of upward movement in both audiences and locally derived revenues and this is the way we intend to continue to develop our operation.”

“For the benefit of the industry as a whole, I only wish that some of the bigger brands were more successful than they are. It’s clear from even a casual look at RAJAR that some are in decline and this is not good for any of us,” he said.

The group recently embarked in a recruitment drive to add Creative Writers to each of its stations and Rogers confirmed that they are continuing to develop strategies that will drive their local impact still further over the next few years. “We are increasingly happy with our approach and are now investing heavily in driving it yet further to ensure that each of our stations takes maximum advantage of its local opportunities.”
