Radio operator, UKRD Group, has helped to raise more than £14,000 for victims of the Haiti Earthqauke.

The online auction called ‘Hope for Haiti' was an idea initiated by Rose Newdick, a receptionist and administrator at the group's station in Norfolk, KL.FM. It was supported by organisations, celebrities and artists from across the music and show-biz sector - with lots ranging from limited edition Take That artwork to Simon Cowell's suit.

Launched on Tuesday 2nd February, three weeks to the day after the devastating earthquake hit Haiti, it lasted 4 days and was broadcast across 47 commercial radio stations - with a combined audience of more than 3.5 million. It also had the official backing of the DEC itself which welcomed the initiative. Every penny raised has gone to their appeal to rebuild the quake-hit country.

£14,060.30 could buy any one of the following:

  • 8,436 buckets to help families gain access to water
  • 937 hygiene kits with essentials such as soap, detergent, toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • 468 ration packs to feed an average family of 5 for 4-6 weeks
  • 2,109 tarpaulins or plastic sheets to provide basic shelter to protect families
  • 562 household essentials kits
  • 140 temporary shelters each for 2 families

On hearing the total, William Rogers CEO of UKRD said "We work in a quite amazing industry and one which can make a real difference to people's lives. Hope for Haiti was a great example of local commercial radio stations coming together to provide much needed public profile as well as direct help and aid for those who are in desperate need of it. What an entirely appropriate response to the tragic situation and one which everyone involved can be proud of."
