Following the announcement on Tuesday that Local Radio Day is to be held on May 27th this year, local stations have started to join the campaign and sign up to the day to celebrate the achievements of proper local radio in the sector.

Nation Broadcasting, with its five local stations in Wales, including Bridge FM and Swansea Bay Radio, was first to announce its involvement.

Group Managing Director, Martin Mumford, said “This is a great initiative to highlight the important, everyday role local radio stations play in their communities for listeners and local businesses. Nation Broadcasting is extremely proud of its market leading local stations in Wales and we look forward to celebrating and showcasing some of their work on Local Radio Day.”

“Interest in Local Radio Day is beginning to grow and we have received a number of enquiries from different operators over the last 24 hours,” said UKRD’s Chief Executive Officer, William Rogers, who announced the launch of Local Radio Day this week.

The group has confirmed that it continues to receive additional endorsements from politicians and celebrities and that the website established to front the day and carry information about it, www.localradioday.co.uk, is beginning to “fill up with great content and endorsements from all over the place,” said Rogers.

“Our own stations are using Local Radio Day as an opportunity to get out and about across their respective patches and deliver a day of community engagement that really does scream local, local, local,” he said. “It’s great that others are joining in the fun as well as the more serious side of driving home the message of the importance local radio has to local communities. Whatever they do, it all adds to the scale of activity being undertaken.”
