Local Radio Day received a further boost this week when BBC local radio stations, BBC  Surrey and BBC Sussex added their names to those already celebrating Local Radio Day on May 27th

Together with several community stations and almost two dozen local commercial stations, the two BBC local radio stations add further to the momentum the day is gathering as more stations get on board.

Assistant Editor of the BBC stations, Mark Carter said, “I’m delighted that BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey are supporting this initiative, celebrating all that is great about local radio. In a multi-media world, there is most definitely still place for stations like ours, guiding listeners through the news stories that really matter to them.”

The website set up to promote Local Radio Day, www.localradioday.co.uk , is filling up rapidly with station endorsements, political and celebrity support and information about the day itself.

“We are delighted that we are seeing some serious traction for this initiative and it’s great that so many stations delivering local radio to their communities are coming together to mark and celebrate all that is great about this part of our industry,” said UKRD’s Chief Executive Officer, William Rogers.

“BBC local radio plays an important part in the radio landscape and it’s terrific to have some of their stations on board with this initiative,” he said. “We have been amazed at the level of interest and there are many others who are talking to us about getting on board. It’s great that the operators of proper local radio can come together in this way.”

“This must be the first time, possibly ever, that local commercial, local BBC and local community stations have all come together to celebrate what they do and trumpet the successes of everything local,” said Rogers
