With almost 60 stations having registered to take part and many more indicating their support on the day itself, Local Radio Day has been hailed “a great success and a strong foundation upon which to build for the years ahead,” by UKRD’s Chief Executive Officer, William Rogers.
“The scale of activity undertaken by literally scores of stations across the length and breadth of the UK was quite remarkable and proper local radio celebrated in style,” he said.

“What was even more fantastic, and bodes well for future years, was the number of stations that had not indicated that they’d be taking part but did so and the large number of presenters and managers in other stations right across the local radio spectrum who offered more support and encouragement through social media,” said Rogers. “This will certainly mean significantly more engagement next year.”

Local Radio Day was an initiative launched by UKRD just over a month ago with political and celebrity support along with an endorsement from Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, John Whittingdale, who praised local radio for the work it did. A dedicated web-site, mobile ‘phone app, jingle package and Local Radio Day production package all added to the focus of attention on the day.

“What has been particularly brilliant about all this is that once launched, those involved in proper local radio took up the challenge and made the day an initiative about all parts of the proper local radio sector and not just one groups’ initiative. We’re delighted that by May 27th, this was less to do with UKRD and everything to do with proper local radio in all of its forms all over the country. Proper local radio stations, large and small, took ownership of this and that is exactly what we hoped would happen. I can’t wait until next year when there is now every prospect that proper local radio will make even more of this in 2017,” he said.

“We’ve already had contact from a lot of people seeking confirmation that this is in the calendar for next year; which it is!”
