Private radio operator, UKRD Group, has topped the “Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For” list following publication of the 2011 results on Sunday.

At a Black Tie awards ceremony in front of over 1,200 people held at Battersea Arena in London, the group learned that it had come 1st in the rankings, grabbing top spot and up from its 27th position in the previous years “Small Companies” list. The announcement was made, and the award presented, by BBC TV Breakfast Presenter, Bill Turnbull.

Chief Executive Officer, William Rogers, said that the accreditation was a remarkable achievement and reflected the major progress being made by the company over the last two years or so since the acquisition of The Local Radio Company.

“To have stepped up a category and at the same time received such a remarkable accolade is testament to the culture, values and involving style of the business and this is a reflection of our managers at all levels as well as the teams we have on the ground and their full engagement with our organisation,” he said.

“I am hugely proud of this recognition and what it says not only about our business but more importantly, our people. The team is to be commended on its outstanding performance over the last year,” said Rogers. “We’ve decided that everyone will have an extra “Best Companies Bank Holiday” to celebrate this achievement. Being number one on any list of achievers is a special place to be but being top of a list of best companies across all business sectors is particularly pleasing.”

UKRD Group is the only radio company in the country to be accredited in this way and was the highest ranked media company of any type in the category which covers businesses employing over 250 people.

UKRD recently posted operating profits of almost £1.5m and acquired East Lancashire station, 107 The Bee in January of this year, bringing its portfolio of stations to 16. The acquisition made the group the fifth largest radio operator in the UK by licence number.
