UKRD Group has increased the number of licences it operates across England to nineteen following its acquisition this week of Fresh Radio, the local station covering the Yorkshire Dales, and cemented its position as the country’s fourth largest operator of commercial radio licences.

The licence will be operated from nearby Harrogate and will be managed by the team at Stray FM whose product will now cover the new patch. Existing programming will be editorially changed to reflect Stray FM’s larger area and an additional local journalist will be recruited to ensure that news coverage reflects the new TSA. An increase in the size of the local sales team is also planned.

UKRD’s Chief Executive, William Rogers, said that he was pleased with the acquisition and felt that the newly enlarged area which Stray FM would serve would deliver “great, locally focussed and relevant radio” to its enlarged TSA.

“We have been looking at this licence for some time and I am delighted that we have been able to come to a satisfactory agreement with the owners to acquire it,” said Rogers.

Managing Director of Stray FM, Sarah Barry, confirmed that the acquisition would lead to people being recruited in news and sales to cover the new patch. “We are looking to build a strong locally relevant presence in the new part of the TSA and our whole team is really excited about the opportunity this presents us to grow our station and our business more generally.”

Roger Tempest, the previous owner of Fresh Radio said that he felt this change would be a really positive move for the station and he was excited about the plans that UKRD had. “I believe this will bring real benefits to both listeners and advertisers and I am delighted the station has found a home with UKRD.”

UKRD now owns and operates nineteen licences across England and with this acquisition, has re-enforced its position as the dominant player in North Yorkshire, also owning stations based out of Scarborough and York.
