Switch-over “off” after latest DAB data published

“It is inconceivable that any Government would even attempt something as stupid as a digital switch-over in 2015 after publication of the latest quarterly RAJAR audience figures,” claims UKRD’s Chief Executive Officer.

“With not even one fifth of commercial radios share coming from the DAB platform, it is a complete nonsense to suggest that the scene is set for a DAB switchover in 2015 and any Government that advocated such a move would be perpetrating an act of vandalism against the sector; particularly the local commercial sector where even less share is delivered by the DAB platform.”

All commercial radio share of listening via the DAB platform is just 18.2% and whilst the total radio share, including the BBC, is just above 21%, DAB represents only a small minority of listening when compared to analogue services.

“Of course, when you cheat, as I believe the Government and Digital Radio UK are doing, and add in online, TV and mobile applications, you increase the digital listening numbers but that is typical of the kind of smoke and mirrors that has dogged this whole issue for years. We are talking about a switch to DAB and to cheat your way to switchover numbers by including all those other digital platforms that have nothing at all to do with DAB is simply nonsensical,” said Rogers.

“The Government should allow this process to evolve, delivering a multi-platform environment we can all support, including DAB, led by consumer desires rather than artificially distorting everything, including statistics, to deliver something that will end up in a complete mess if rushed.”
